214 fungi red-listed 2019

Fungal conservation became global in 2019. Due to the contributions of many mycologists from throughout the world, the number of fungi in the global red-list greatly increased from 66 to 280. The largest number of species are from Europe thanks to the hard work of members of the European Council for Fungal Conservation while the Australasian Initiative resulted in 51 assessments.

The activities of the Global Fungal Red List Initiative intensified in 2019 with a significant increase in participation by the mycological community, three workshops (Cambridge, Sarawak and Melbourne) and thanks to pivotal support from IUCN, the IUCN–Toyota partnership (2016–2021) and the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund.

Efforts to assess fungi will continue in 2020 focused on macrofungi, both basidiomycetes and ascomycetes. Significant effort will go into assessing the conservation status of endemic species of three regions, South America, Europe and Southeast Asia. The active involvement of the mycological community, professionally employed and amateurs, is needed for these efforts to succeed.

Please contribute information on species you are familiar with. The data compiled on these pages will be used for completing assessments on each species during three upcoming workshops, one on South American species, one on European species and the other on Southeast Asian species. Guiliana Furci and Daniella Torres with help of Greg Mueller are leading the South American work. Anders Dahlberg and members of the European Council for the Conservation of Fungi are leading the European work. Andrew Anak Ngadin is leading the Southeast Asian work with help from Greg Mueller.
