Activities 2019

The activities of the Global Fungal Red List Initiative have intensified since 2017 with increased participation by the mycological community supported by some funding from IUCN through the IUCN–Toyota partnership (2016–2021) that was launched in 2016 (https://www.iucn.org/content/new-iucn-toyota-partnership-expand-knowledge-threats-global-biodiversity). This partnership aims to increase knowledge on the extinction risk of more than 28 000 species with emphasis to include many species that are valuable human food sources. Fungi are one of many groups of organisms supported.

While efforts to assess all groups of fungi will continue in 2019, the focus for the IUCN – Toyota partnership fungal initiative will be on macrofungi, both basidiomycetes and ascomycetes. Significant effort will go into assessing the conservation status of endemic species of two regions, Europe and Australasia. The active involvement of the mycological community, professionally employed and amateurs, is needed for these efforts to succeed.

Web pages for each species selected for assessment will be found on this site, see the 2019 workshops at the Events tab under Proposals. Please contribute information on species you are familiar with. The data compiled on these pages will be used for completing assessments on each species during two upcoming workshops, one on European species funded by the IUCN / Toyota Partnership and the other on Australasian species funded by the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund with additional funds from the IUCN / Toyota Partnership. Anders Dahlberg and members of the European Council for the Conservation of Fungi are leading the European work. Peter Buchanan and Tom May with help from Greg Mueller are leading the Australasian effort. Contact either Anders or Greg for more information.
