Activities 2017–2020

The activities of the Global Fungal Red List Initiative are increasing from 2017 and onwards due to that the fungal specialist groups is part of a larger initiative and are getting 25 000 US$ in annual support to facilitate global assessments. The funding comes from an IUCN–Toyota partnership (2016–2021) that was launched last year (https://www.iucn.org/content/new-iucn-toyota-partnership-expand-knowledge-threats-global-biodiversity ). This partnership aims to increase knowledge on the extinction risk of more than 28 000 species with emphasis to include many species that are valuable human food sources. Fungi are one of many groups of organisms supported.

The intention is that already by March 31^th 2017, red-list assessment of 200 fungi should be finalized, reviewed and submitted for inclusion into the Global Red List.

The setting for the fungal partnership for the first year is divided between three of our IUCN specialist groups; the ascomycete, basidiomycete and lichen groups. Each specialist group is independently in charge of their “species”. For the ascomycetes and basidiomycetes, the whole process from proposal, compilation of information, assessment and notification of inclusion into the global Red List will be made through this web-site and coordinated by David Minter and Anders Dahlberg, respectively. The lichen group is taking care of their assessments. If you want more information or are interested to contribute with the lichen assessment, contact the chair Christoph Scheidegger.

The aim for the first part of the project is to have 50 ascomycetes, 100 basidiomycetes ad 50 lichens and assessed by March 31^th 2017. The partnership will thereafter annually support an increasing number of species annually assessed until 2020.

Your and other mycologist’s contribution in this project is decisive. The funding is minute in comparison with the amount of resources required to meet the knowledge demanded, to be of high quality and extensive. Hence, the predominant part of the work will critically rely on voluntary contributions from the professional and amateur mycological society. Anders Dahlberg is coordinating the assessment of Basidiomycetes, with support from Greg Mueller, and David Minter of Ascomycetes on this website. Michael Krikorev is maintaining and managing the web-site. For the time being, Anders will also support initiatives of rust and smuts and Chytrids et al.
