Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Geastrum dolomiticum belongs to the former G. minimum species complex. It is distinguished by exoperidial features (shape of crystals) and molecular data.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

A newly described species known only from a restricted area in Hungary. It is potentially overlooked and might thus occur elsewhere in suitable habitats. With the current knowledge it cannot be evaluated: NE

Geographic range

Geastrum dolomiticum is currently only known from Western-central Hungary. A record from China listed in GBIF database is ambiguous since molecular data indicates its close relationship (>99% identity) with the widely distributed G. granulosum.

Habitat and Ecology

Geastrum dolomiticum grows in small groups in calcareous open rocky grassland on dolomite bedrock.
