As of Feb. 2023 authors have not found any more populations.
Bryoclavula phycophila is a lichenized basidiomycete described for Japan in 2020, where it has been found in two locations. More records or search efforts are needed to determine population size and distribution. The species is assessed as Data Deficient (DD).
Bryoclavula phycophila is the type species of the monotypic genus Bryoclavula, described in 2020 using morphological and phylogenetic data (Masumoto and Degawa, 2020).
Known from the Kumamoto and Nagano Prefectures in Japan (Masumoto and Degawa, 2020 and Masumoto and Degawa, 2021).
B. phycophila has only been found in 2 sites in Japan. It is possible that its small size (less than 5mm) and possible confusion with other species (e.g in the genus Multiclavula) has limited the number of observations for this species, making it difficult to determine whether this species is uncommon or overlooked.
Population Trend: Uncertain
B. phycophila is a lichenized fungus, growing in association with green algae. I has been found on bryophyte covered rocks in a canyon boardwalk side slope and growing directly from a stone on an unpaved forest road, in winter and autumn respectively (reported by Dr. Masumoto).
Targeted search efforts are needed to estimate population size and distribution.
