Recently detected and described species from Southern Europe. Name currently invali d(Art. 40.7 Shenzhen) according to Index fungorum. Species is well defined with ITS sequence data, but is morphologically similar to eg A. telleriae and A. pteridis, thus sequence data is needed for a reliable identification.
A recently described species of Astraeus from SE Europe (Macedonia and Serbia). It may have been overlooked due to its ressemblance with other species of the genus. ID needs DNA-sequencing. Current trends and potential threats are not known. Search activites needed to add to our knowledge about its distribution and frequency. Preliminary assessment NE
Currently known from SE Europe but has potentially been overlooked and may have a wider distribution range in the Mediterranean area of Europe. Fruitbodies recorded in North Macedonia and Serbia , but recently also detected in e-DNA samples from Georgia and Turkey.
Only scattered occurrences recorded in SE Europe, but e-DNA-sequencing indicate a wider distribution. No conclusions on population trends can be drawn from current data.
Population Trend: Uncertain
Ectomycorrhizal fungus of warm deciduous forests; recorded under Quercus, Fagus, Carpinus
Betula and Pinus. It probably has a wide range of mycorrhizal partners.
No specific threats detected. A potentially small population should however be considered.
Astraeus macedonicus should high-lighted for discovery missions in SE Europe. Identification is, however, difficult in the field as reliable identification needs DNA-sequencing.
