Assessment Notes

The content on this page is fetched from The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/198481126/198487493

Justification

Xerocomellus salicicola is a recently described member of the X. 'chrysenteron' complex from western North America. More information is needed on range, habitat limitations and subpopulations, but it has been reported over a large range from California to British Columbia and it appears to be stable. Therefore, it is assessed here as Least Concern.

Taxonomic notes

Xerocomellus salicicola is a recently described species (Frank et al. 2020). Older records would have been made under the name Xerocomellus (or Boletus) chrysenteron.

Geographic range

The distribution of this species is still poorly known. It is currently known from disjunct subpopulations from southern California to Washington. Photographs of specimens appearing to be of Xerocomellus salicicola from southern British Columbia, Canada have also been posted online (iNaturalist 2021).

Population and Trends

Being a newly described species, very little in known about population dynamics or trends of this species. The habitat in which it occurs is stable across much of the range.

Population Trend: unknown

Habitat and Ecology

It is found typically in wet, muddy or hard-packed soil in swampy or riparian areas. It is ectomycorrhizal, associated with willow (Salix spp.), cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa), and occasionally in landscaped areas with ornamental birch (Betula spp.) and Linden (Tilia spp.). Specific habitat details are still lacking, though.

Threats

No specific threats have been identified with regards to this species.

Conservation Actions

No specific conservation actions are needed with regards to this species. A better understanding of its range, and habitat limitations and tree associations of this species, are needed.
