This species was until recently treated as Lycoperdon pyriforme but was transferred to the monotypic genus Apioperdon by Vizzini & Ercole (2017).
Apioperdon pyriforme is a frequent species with a wide distrubution in the northern hemisphere. No significant threats can be detected. It could be assessed as Least Concern.
Widely distributed in Eurasia and North America. Also in low-Arctic regions of Iceland and Greenland. Scattered records in Australia (indroduced?).

Saprotrophic on decaying wood on the ground, trunks and logs of deciduous and coniferous trees in woodland, parks and gardens. Also on buried wood on road verges, car parks and farm yards.
