Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Originally described as Secotium arizonicum and also known as Endoptychum arizonicum. Possibly a complex of cryptic species (Loizides et al. 2020).

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

This species appears to be seems restricted to xeric regions of North America. Small population, many records old and localities should be reviewed. No data on population trends.  Potentially a belonging to a complex of cryptic species. Proposed assessment: DD

Geographic range

Recorded from dry and xeric areas in the United States (Arizona, Texas). and Mexico. Reports from Argentina and Italy need to be verified. An eDNA sample submitted to GenBank under this name from Kazakhstan does not fully match the type sequence of C. arizonicum.  It could be assumed that its distrubution is restricted to arid regions of N. America.

Population and Trends

No data om current trends.  Known global population estimated from 112 records in GBIF database. However many of the records are old.

Population Trend: Uncertain

Habitat and Ecology

Dry grazed grassland, xeric sandy habitats and arid steppe vegetation.

Research needed

Old records should be reviewed and localities revisted to get a clearer picture of threats and trends. Loizides et al (2020) reports the presence of two unnamed sister clades indicating a complex of cryptic species. This complex should be resolved using molecular and morphological methods.
