Mushroom, Bracket and PuffballStrobilomyces brunneolepidotus Har. Takah. & Taneyama, in Takahashi, Taneyama, Kobayashi, Oba, Hadano, Hadano, Kurogi & Wada, The fungal flora in southwestern Japan, Agarics and boletes 1: 303 (2016)
Quite a remarkable species, easily identified in a field. Despite its wide distribution, it is rather rare throughout the entire distribution area.
This species was originally described from Japan in the Okinawa Prefecture (Takahashi et al. 2016), and has also been found in China (Yunnan, Guangdong, and Fujian Provinces), Taiwan, and Vietnam (Han et al. 2020, Pham and Morozova 2020).
The species is known from a single locality in Japan (Okinawa Prefecture), four localities in Taiwan (Taipei), four localities in China (Yunnan, Guangdong, and Fujian Provinces), and a single locality in Vietnam (Khanh Hoa). Therefore, there are approximately 10 known localities.
There are thought to be 50-100x unknown localities, as the species is fairly inconspicuous, occurs in quite widespread broadleaf forest habitat, and across four countries.
Population Trend:
The species grows on soil in upper montane mossy evergreen broadleaf forest
