Assessment Notes

The content on this page is fetched from The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/189311949/217823947

This species is currently known from only a single site, within secondary dipterocarp lowland forest in Peninsular Malaysia: the Pasoh Forest Reserve, Negeri Sembilan. Only two specimens have been collected from this locality. Until further research is carried out to confirm this species' full distribution, and to determine its specific habitat preferences (including which Shorea species this species associates with), this species is listed as Data Deficient.

Geographic range

The holotype of this species was located within the Pasoh Forest Reserve, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia in 2006. An additional specimen of this species is known from the same locality, and was collected 3 days later (Buyck 2014). No further information regarding this species' distribution appears to be known.

Population and Trends

All known records of this species appear to place it within the Pasoh National Forest Reserve, and so it is reasonable to assume that this species is stable and not under significant threat at this site. However, the wider area is under threat from habitat loss.

Population Trend: unknown

Habitat and Ecology

The genus Cantharellus consists of species that form ectomycorrhizal associations with trees. Little is known regarding the habitat preferences of this species, although this species is known to occur within secondary dipterocarp lowland rain forest near Shorea species (Buyck 2014). More specific details regarding this species' habitat preferences are lacking, however.

The only known site is within a protected area, so it is assumed to not face any significant threats at this site. However, the wider area is under threat from palm oil expansion (see National Institute for Environmental Studies 1990-2022) and so this could be impacting the species if it does occur outside of the Pasoh Forest Reserve.

Conservation Actions

Further research regarding this species’ habitat preferences (including which Shorea species this species associates with), and its current distribution, is required in order to build an accurate assessment of this species.
