Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

The ascocarp is a small, club-shaped (clavate), and typically reaches 2–6 cm in height with a blue-green base. In M. cyanobasis, spores are generally shorter than those of M. viride and is identified as phylogenetically distinct.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

From the rare sightings of the blue-based earthtongue, it appears to have a very small population size and area of extent and is found in undisturbed, nutrient poor grasslands and long-established woodland soils. The blue-green colour at the base makes it quite unusual.
