Assessment Notes
Justification
This species is known from only five localities, in Guyana and Colombia. This species has not been reported from any protected areas, and its habitat is potentially threatened by logging, wood harvesting, and mining, however further research is needed in order to confirm this. Given its relatively wide distribution and lack of evidence of steep declines, it is currently assessed as Least Concern.
Geographic range
Craterellus strigosus has been collected in the Amazonian biome in Guyana and Colombia This species is currently known from only five localities: two in Guyana (
Dicymbe forest on white sand soils and associated with
Pakaraimaea dipterocarpacea); and three in Colombia (two in the Middle Caquetá region in the north of the Amazonia department, and one in the south of Colombia 27 km north of Leticia, close to the border with Brazil). The three localities in Colombia are separated by 420 km, all associated with the endemic dipterocarp tree
Pseudomonotes tropenbosii or
Dicymbe uaiparuensis.
Population and Trends
The habitat of Craterellus strigosus is likely to be threatened by logging, wood harvesting and illegal mining at at least some of its known localities, and this species has not been reported from any protected areas. It is reasonable to assume that this species' population may be decreasing, however further information regarding the present wild distribution of this species is needed in order to confirm this.

Habitat and Ecology
Craterellus atratus is a common ectomycorrhizal species, occurring as scattered formations on the root/humus mat of forest floor. It has been collected in the Amazonian biome, including Fabaceae-dominated forest (
Dicymbe spp. and
Aldina spp.) in Guyana and Colombia (Henkel
et al. 2012, Smith
et al. 2013, Vasco-Palacios
et al. 2018), forests dominated with
Pakaraimaea dipterocarpacea in Guyana (Smith
et al. 2013) and
terra-firme forests dominated by the dipteroparp tree
Pseudomonotes tropenbosii in Colombia (Vasco-Palacios
et al. 2022).
Threats
This species is likely to be threatened by logging, wood harvesting and illegal mining at at least some of its known localities. Populations of
Dicymbe species associated with
Craterellus strigosus are severely fragmented in some regions, however some
Dicymbe species have been assessed Least Concern (Beech 2024a,b). Also, the population of
Pseudomonotes tropenbosii is thought to be stable as the forests in these areas are still in relatively good condition and the species has been assessed as Least Concern (Lopez-Gallego and Morales 2020). However, the known sites of
Craterellus strigosus are located close to indigenous villages, and indigenous peoples use the
terra-firme forests to establish chagras or farming areas, where they could destroy entire patches of habitat. Also, this region is being negatively impacted by illegal mining (Forest 500 initiative 2024). These actions may become future, broader threats to the species.
Conservation Actions
No conservation actions are currently in place for
Craterellus strigosus. Protection of this species' habitat is required for its successful conservation. Further research into this species' current wild distribution, habitat preferences, and potential threats is also required to build an accurate assessment of this species.
Use and Trade
Craterellus strigosus forms small basidiomes; no human use is known.
