Taxonomic notes

Geastrum nigrum was originally described as Disciseda nigra   Dörfelt & H. Nowak (nom. inval.). Sequence data, placed it in Geastrum and it was subsequently described in 2017 as a new species,  Geastrum nigrum Jeppson & E. Larsson (Index Fungorum 346: 1).


Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Only known from a restriced geographical area in German. No recent records. Looked for in vain at type locality in 2017.

Geographic range

Known only from a restricted area in Germany (Bundesland Sachsen-Anhalt, around Hadmersleben.).


Population and Trends

No data. Last seen in 1966. Searched for at the type locality without success in 2017 (Jeppson & Larsson, unpublished).

Habitat and Ecology

In leaf litter under Syringa vulgaris and Symphoricarpus in bushy vegetation bordering cultivated fields., i e in anthropogenic sites. Nitrophilous.

The known localities should be revisted and carefully monitored to ascertain if Geastrum nigrum is still extant.
