A recently described species reminiscent of B. tomentosa, B. hollosii in the /tomentosa clade in Bovista subg. Bovista. Holotype: LE253875 - GenBank ITS MH628572
Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?
Bovista helenae is only known from its type locality in southern Russia. Pending an increased knowledge of its status and distribution, it is suggested as DD.
Geographic range
Only known from its type locality in Astrakhan oblast, southern Russia (Europe). Potentially overlooked in steppic regions i East Central Europe and Central Asia.

Habitat and Ecology
Dry steppe with Poaceae and Artemisia.
Threats
Considerably decreasing area of steppe vegetation due to changing land use turning steppe grasslands into arable fields. Historical and ongoing.
Desertification of suitable habitats as a consequence of global warning.
Conservation Actions
Bovista helenae should be searched for in suitable steppe habitats in East Central Europe and Asia in order to establish its current status and distribution. New records need to be confirmed with DNA-sequencing.
