Taxonomic notes

Syn. Tulostoma fimbriatum var. heterosporum J.E. Wright, Biblthca Mycol. 113: 113 (1987)

To reliably identify this species, observations of micro-characters or DNA-sequencing will be needed.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Species with a pronounced European distribution judging from available data. Since it was previously not distinguished from T. fimbriatum, a considerably larger distribution area could be anticipated.
Small population (<150 records on GBIF database). Occurs in various types of dry calcareous grassland.

Suggested assessment: DD

Geographic range

Western and Central Europe + Caucasus (old record). N. America: Massachusetts (2018) and California (old record). Distribution range potentially wider as this species was formerly not distinguished from the more common T. fimbriatum).

Population and Trends

Currently < 150 records on GBIF database, seemingly European distribution. However, the distribution is potentially wider as this species previously has been recorded under T. fimbriatum.
Occurs in a variety of dry calcareous grassland habitats.

Population Trend: Uncertain

Habitat and Ecology

Saprotrophic on calcareous sandy soil in semi-arid regions, amongst grass and herbs.
