Taxonomic notes

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Only known from the type locality on a small island in South-Central Sweden. Despite regular monitoring of the locality no fruitbodies have been observed since 2006. Redlisted in Sweden as CR (D). Suggested assessment for global redlist CR (D-criterion) or EX (extinct).

Geographic range

Only known from its type locality on a small island, where fruitbodies were observed regularly for more than 30 years. E-DNA from a soil sample from Zimbabwe is listed as G. flexuosum in GBIF database but its ITS does not match sequence data from the Swedish holotype and topotypes.

Population and Trends

Known from one single mycelium from one locality in Sweden, last observed in 2006. The spot has been monitored almost annually since then but no more fruitbodies have been detected. Potentially extinct.

Population Trend: Uncertain

Habitat and Ecology

In the only known locality its was found among leaf litter on nutrient-rich soil under an old Fraxinus in the yard of an abandoned small farm. The site is semi-open and the spot where the fruitbodies appeared was a former compost heap. The surrounding woodland consists of a mixture of Betula, Quercus, Fraxinus and Picea on slightly calcareous soil.

Threats

Conservation Actions

The species is subject to an national action plan including yearly monitoring and measures to prevent overgrowth and a thickening of tree-layer. with invading Picea. The locality is located in a nature reserve.
Dedicated search for Geastrum flexuosum in the nearby area as well as in suitable places in south-central Sweden should be encouraged.
Currently redlisted as CR on the D-criterion in Sweden.
