Lycoperdon capense Fr.(1848) (Holotype UPS, Zeyher 106[a]) was cited as the holotype for B. promontorii Kreisel (1967). Coetzee & van Wyk (2005) transferred L. capense to Bovista and B. capensis is now the current name for this South African taxon. It belongs in the hitherto unresolved Bovista aestivalis species complex. According to Kreisel (1967) a South African vicariant species of B. aestivalis.
Due to its ambiguous taxonomic status it cannot currently be evaluated.
NE
Due to taxonomic issues it is currently not possible to unambiguously map its world distribution. There are records of B. capensis and its synonym B. promontorii from several continents, but they all need revision as soon as the taxonomy of the B. aestivalis complex has been resolved. (see Rebriev et al. 2020 for a taxonomic discussion)
