Justification

Cortinarius piceae is an ectomycorrhizal fungus associated exclusively with Picea abies, in boreal-montane calcareous Picea- or mixed Picea-Abies-Pinus mainly old-growth forests of northern and central Europe.

This type of phlegmacioid Cortinarius-rich, calcareous Picea abies forests often occupies small and fragmented areas. The area and quality of these habitats are declining due to logging and also impacted negatively by urbanization, lime quarries etc. Overall habitat loss of old-growth calcareous Picea forest, and subsequent population decline of C. piceae in the past, and ongoing inferred to be about 20% over 50 years (three fungal generations) and projected to continue about the same rate.

Cortinarius piceae is known from approx. 300 sites in Europe, and the total number of sites is estimated to be potentially 10 times higher, about 3000 sites, corresponding to an estimate of more than 50 000 mature individuals.

Therefore, C. piceae is assessed as Near Threatened (A2c+3c+4c).


Taxonomic notes

Cortinarius piceae (=Calonarius piceae; Cortinarius calochrous var. coniferarum) is a member of the sect/subgen Calochroi.


Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Cortinarius piceae is a strictly European species being habitat-specific for a declining forest type; calcareous Picea abies forests.


Geographic range

As many other European calciphilous Cortinarius Picea/conifer associates, Cortinarius piceae shows a bicentric distribution, restricted mainly to central Fennoscandia-Estonia of northern Europe and the Black Forest-Jura-Prealp region of central Europe. In central Europe it is so far found mainly in Austria, with a few records from eastern France-Germany-Switzerland-northern Italy-Slovenia. A couple of reports from Russian Siberia represent misidentifications.


Population and Trends

Cortinarius piceae is according to data from national red Lists (e.g. Hyvärinen et al 2019; Artsdatabanken 2021; SLU Artdatabanken 2026) and GBIF data (April 2026) known from approx. 90 localities from Norway, 50 from Sweden and 50 from Finland, and approx. 50 from the Alps-Prealps countries (eastern France, Switzerland-Austria-northern Italy). The species seems little known and so far little sampled in central and eastern Europe. The total number of sites is estimated to potentially be ten times, approx. 3000 localities. This is estimate to correspond to about 60 000 mature individuals (Dahlberg & Mueller, 2011). Overall habitat loss of old-growth calcareous Picea forest, and subsequent population decline of C. piceae in the past, and ongoing inferred to be about 20% over 50 years (three fungal generations, cf Dhlberg & Mueller, 2011) and projected to continue about the same rate.

Habitat and Ecology

Cortinarius piceae seems to be associated exclusively with Picea abies. Its major habitats are strongly calcareous, mossy, herb-rich Picea abies forests or mixed Picea-Abies-Pinus forests of N or C Europe. In N Europe it is typical of almost barren limestone surfaces with karst structures (holes and furrows). These are forest types with many habitat-specific phlegmacioid taxa of Cortinarius,  including the globally redlisted C. caesiocinctus (VU), C. dalecarlicus (VU), C. cupreorufus (NT), C. meinhardii (NT), all belonging to sect./subgenus Calochroi. The species occurs mainly in old-growth forests, but where habitat conditions otherwise are optimal, it may also re-establish in >40 years old forest plantations after clear-cuts.

Threats

Cortinarius piceae and its habitats, calcareous Picea abies and Picea-Abies-Pinus forests, have been declining e.g. due to areal loss (urbanization, including tourist resorts, road constructions, expansion of limestone quarries) as well as decreased habitat quality/ecological conditions due to modern forestry with clear-cuttings. The boreal calcareous spruce forests of Norway are now redlisted as Vulnerable or Near Threatened (dependent on region), mainly due to extensive forestry with clear-cuts (Artsdatabanken 2025). It should be noted that the species may re-establish and produce basidiocarps in formerly clear-cutted forests after approx. 40 years, but with repeated clear-cut forestry with rotation time of 50-55 years, the species will have a very short “dispersal window” with increasing problems with new re-establishments. Modern forestry is an increasing threat also in C Europe. Forest statistics from Austria indicates that forestry activity has been doubled the last 40 years, and according to a Red List of habitats in Austria, the Abies-Picea forests are endangered in many regions of Austria.

Conservation Actions

To prevent decline and further fragmentation of calcareous Picea forests with good habitat quality, it is important to set aside reserves on calcareous hotspots, housing many rare/redlisted, habitat-specific species such as C. cupreorufus, C. dalecarlicus, C. piceae and C. meinhardii. It is furthermore important to establish also sites with a less strict conservation regime, such as woodland key biotopes, where some non-destructive human activities are accepted (such as less intensive forestry, with closed cutting).

Research needed

More mapping/surveying and monitoring of C. piceae is needed. The species is sometimes difficult to distinguish from some other Calochroi species (such as C. dalecarlicus, C. flavipallens and C. metarius), and must be regarded as fairly little known, especially from e.g. the Carpathians, where it probably has a wider distribution, probably also in the Balkan region and Caucasus. Finally, more documentation on the degree of decline of the habitats themselves is needed.
