Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Syn.: Gyrophragmium dunalii (Fr.) Zeller, Mycologia 35(4): 411 (1943)

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

A xerothermophilous species of sand dunes, sand steppes and semi-deserts. Core area in the Mediterranean basin (sand dune areas; houses appr. 50 % of the known population).

Small population (estimated number of mature individuals 6000)
Population trend potentially declining due to habitat loss when sandy beaches/sand dunes are transformed into tourist areas (historical and ongoing).

Suggested assessment: NT-VU (A), VU(C1)?

Geographic range

Europe: Mediterranean basin + Saudi Arabia. Isolated inland record from Hungary.
N. America: Mexico and USA/California; S. America: Argentina (one record only, to be confirmed)

Population and Trends

Appr 170 records on GBIF database = <150 localities

Estimated number of localities: 300
Estimated number of mature individuals: 6000

EOO: 76 000 000 km2 (S. American unverified record included)
AOO: 216 km2

Population trend probably declining due to habitat loss (tourism, buildings etc on sandy beaches; historical and ongoing)

Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology

Saprotrophic on maritime sand dunes and dry sandy steppe- semidesert habitats. Xerothermophilous, psammophilous

Threats

Exploitation of maritime sand dune systems (tourism, buildings). This is a historical and ongoing process with considerable effects on natural sand dune systems (the Spanish Mediterranean coastline as an example).
