Justification

Stropharia ambigua is an abundant and widespread mushroom in western North America. It is one of the most common mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest, and is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Taxonomic notes

Described from a collection made near Portland, Oregon, USA as Hypholoma ambiguum (Peck 1898), this species was transferred into Stropharia (Zeller 1914) where it resides today.

Geographic range

This species ranges from south-central Alaska into southern California, and east into the northern Rocky Mountains. It is occasional in the edges of the range, but very abundant in northern California and the Pacific Northwest. The name Stropharia ambigua has been applied to records from China and elsewhere outside North America but these are excluded from this assessment pending clarification of their taxonomy.

This is a widespread and very common species, especially in disturbed and urbanized habitats.

It is saprotrophic, growing on conifer needle duff and moss, small woody debris, soil or woodchips.
