Preliminary assessment unable to access full type description.
Since the description of Canthrellus melanoceras there do not appear to be any subsequent records of the species. There is limited information available from the listing of its synonym and with a lack of information on the habitat and ecology of the species, it is not possible to assess the status of its population or distribution. It is therefore assessed as Data Deficient.
Cantharellus melanoceras was described in 1859 by C. Montagne.
On Index Fungorum its homotypic synonyms are listed as Merulius melanoceras (Mont.) Sacc. (described in 1888) and Sesia melanoceras (Mont.) Kuntze, (described in 1891).
GBIF lists taxonomy as doubtful.
Chanterelle species to be assessed as part of the chanterelle comprehensive project.
Type described from Bagnères-de-Luchon in France.
Extent of range is unknown. No occurrence data are available on GBIF for C. melanoceras or its homotypic synonym Merulius melanoceras.
Only known from type.
Population Trend: Uncertain
The type was described in an account of the subterranean galleries of thermal pools in France, and a later account refers to specimens being found on ‘the underside of the upper rails of the Galerie François at its entrance’ (Martin-Sans, 1924) which indicates a wood substrate.
A recent paper refers to C. melanoceras as one of several fungi identified from the same habitat able to grow without light (Vlasenko et al, 2017) .
No known threats.
Confirmation of taxonomic status, population and distribution data and ecology required to better assess species.
