Assessment Notes
Justification
Since the description of
Canthrellus melanoceras there do not appear to be any subsequent records of the species. There is limited information available and with a lack of information on the habitat and ecology of the species, it is not possible to assess the status of its population or distribution. It is therefore assessed as Data Deficient.
Taxonomic notes
It is unlikely to be a
Cantharellus (I. Olariaga Ibarguren
in litt. 2022).
Geographic range
The type was described from Bagnères-de-Luchon in France (Montagne 1859). The full extent of this species is unknown.
Population and Trends
It is only known from the type.
Population Trend: unknown
Habitat and Ecology
The type was described in an account of the subterranean galleries of thermal pools in France, and a later account refers to specimens being found on 'the underside of the upper rails of the Galerie François at its entrance' (Martin-Sans 1924) which indicates a wood substrate. A recent paper refers to
Cantharellus melanoceras as one of several fungi identified from the same habitat able to grow without light (Vlasenko
et al. 2017) .
Threats
Without further information, threats cannot be identified.
Conservation Actions
Confirmation is required of taxonomic status, population and distribution data and ecology to better assess the species.
