Assessment Notes

Justification

Cortinarius caesiocinctus is a European, almost exclusively Fennoscandian ectomycorrhizal fungal species associated with Picea abies. Its major habitat is boreal, calcareous, mainly older,  Picea abies forests. This forest type is vulnerable to areal loss (urbanization, lime quarries, etc.) and to decreased ecological conditions due to modern forestry (repeated clear cuts, with short rotation times).
The estimated European (and global) population is estimated to comprise approx 500 localities with in total of less than 10,000 mature individuals. The species and its habitat is inferred to have a an ongoing decline having resulted in about 25 % decline in the last 50 years (three generations). Based on this, the species is assessed as VU, according to the C criterion (C2a(i), due to continuous decline, population size < 10,000 individuals and very small/isolated subpopulations (less than 1,000 individuals per subpopulation).


Taxonomic notes

Cortinarius caesiocinctus is closely related to C. cobaltinus and another non-described species. A study on the complex is ongoing, and after extensive ITS-sequencing (barcoding), we now have a good picture of the distribution and habitat preferences of these three taxa. Older reports of C. caesiocinctus may refer to any of these three taxa, and not necessarily to C. caesiocinctus s. str.


Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Cortinarius caesiocinctus is a specialized boreal calcareous Picea abies forest species, almost endemic to the Nordic countries. The calcareous Picea abies forests are now declining in the region, and is as a forest type now redlisted in Norway.


Geographic range

Cortinarius caesiocinctus has a wide distribution in calcareous Picea abies forest districts of Central- and Northern Fennoscandia, with approx. 30 known localities in Norway, and approx 20 known localities from Sweden and Finland, respectively. Several records are verified by ITS-DNA sequencing recently from Norway and Sweden, due to a mapping project in some regions from Norway (Hofton et al. 2026), the 2025 Swedish Red List as well as an mapping project of boreal calcareous forests Sweden that started in 2025 (https://borealasvampskogar.se/). Outside Fennoscandia, it is only known and sequence-verified from one locality in E France (Haute-Savoie; type locality), and one from northern Italy (S Tyrol, The Dolomites). A few non-sequence-verified collections from Austria, E France and The Czech Republic may represent the same species (barcoding needed). A few non-sequenced collections from Abies forests in the Spanish Pyrenees, probably represents related species (such as C. cobaltinus). Investigations so far indicate that this species and some other strictly calcareous Picea abies associated taxa (such as C. dalecarlicus and C. piceae) are absent from Siberia and North America, apparently representing a strictly European element.


Population and Trends

Cortinarius caesiocinctus has its major populations in Fennoscandia. Norway has initiated a national management plan for it as it hosts a large part of the known population. In some Norwegian counties, it has been subject to a mapping program the last 3-4 years (Hofton et al. 2026). So far it is known and sequence-verified from 28 localities from SE and C Norway, and the total number is estimated to 100 localities in Norway. In Sweden it is known mainly from central and northern parts, mainly Dalarna and Jämtland and further north and the estimated number of 250 localities is 250. In Finland it is known mainly from central and north parts. We estimate the total number of localities in Fennoscandia to approx 450. Outside the North Europe, the species is only sequence-verified from two localities (France, Italy), and the C European population is estimated to 50 localities. Summing up, the total European population is estimated to be approx 500 localities, corresponding to 10,000 individuals (Dahlberg and Mueller 2011). Cortinarius caesiocinctus is like its major habitat boreal calcareous spruce forests, suspected to have undergone a decline of 15-20% in a period of 50 years or three generations.

Habitat and Ecology

Cortinarius caesiocinctus is associated with Picea abies, possibly also with Pinus sylvestris. Its major habitat is boreal calcareous, mossy, herb-rich older Picea abies forests of North Europe, a forest type with many habitat-specific taxa of phlegmacioid Cortinarius, section Calochroi. Sometimes the species occur together with other calochroii in dry sites with almost barren limestone surfaces with karstic structures (with furrows and holes). The species occurs mainly in old-growth forests, but in strongly calcareous sites. It is recorded from sporocarps in 40 years old planted forests, formerly clear-cut, implying either that its mycelia either has survived on on left trees or re-established from spores. 
In Fennoscandia the species is found mainly in middle boreal to northern boreal sites; that is often in central- and northern regions. 
In C Europe the species is found and sequence-verified just a couple of times, from montane, calcareous spruce-fir forests, supposedly associated with Picea abies also here. It is remarkable that the species so far never found east of Finland in the boreal region, and it seems, together wit many other taxa in this calcareous Picea abies element, to be a strictly European taxon.

Threats

Cortinarius caesiocinctus and its habitats (calcareous Picea abies forests) have been declining e.g. due to areal loss (forestry, urbanization, including tourist resorts, road constructions, expansion of limestone quarries) as well as decreased habitat quality/ecological conditions due to modern forestry with clear-cuttings. Its major habitat, calcareous spruce forests, are now being regarded as Vulnerable (VU) or Nearly Threatened (NT) (dependent on region) in the new habitat/nature type red-list of Norway, mainly due to increased impact from modern forestry (Artsdatabanken 2025). The (Abies-). Picea forests are also endangered in many parts of Austria.

Conservation Actions

To prevent decline by areal loss, habitat decline, fragmentation and reduced ecological quality of calcareous Picea abies forests, it is important to set aside reserves on calcareous hotspots, housing many threatened, habitat-specific species such as C. dalecarlicus, C. flavipallens, C. metarius and C. piceae. It is important also to establish sites with a less strict conservation regime, where some non-destructive human activities are accepted (such as non-intensive forestry with a clear cutting).

Research needed

More mapping/surveying and monitoring of C. caesiocinctus is needed. The species is sometimes difficult to distingush from the closely related C. cobaltinus, and must be regarded as fairly little known. A similar mapping programme as performed in Norway (Hofton et al. 2026) could be established also in Sweden and Finland. Although apparently very rare, the species should be sought in montane-subalpine Alps-Carpathians. Finally, more documentation on the degree of decline of its habitats is needed.
