Originally described as Polyporus melanoporus.
N. melanoporus is the type species of the family Nigrofomitaceae, order Hymenochaetales (Zhou et al., 2018)
Although not a rare species,it occurs in endangered domains. We, thus, suggest this species to be categorized as Near Threatened.
Originally described from Cuba (Montagne, 1842). GBIF database shows records from 13 countries in South and Central America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. However, recent phylogenetic analysis suggests that records outside tropical America may represent different species (Zhou et al., 2018).
Recent phylogenetic analysis suggests that records outside tropical America may represent different species (Zhou et al., 2018). Due to uncertainty of the identity of recorded specimens of Nigrofomes melanoporus outside tropical America, it is impossible to properly assess population and current trends of this species. In GBIF there are 116 records of this species worldwide, being 67 records made in tropical America, mostly in Brazil territory.
Population Trend: Uncertain
Occurs exclusively on coarse woody debris, in shaded areas with high moisture.
Although widespread in tropical America (probably not elsewhere), it is locally threatened by intense anthropogenic activities, especially in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado vegetation (Brazil).
It is dependent of rather large deadwood pieces, which occurs naturally only in old growth forest and/or larger fragments. Thus, preservation of significant forest fragments and proper management of wood resources are fundamental to the conservation of Nigrofomes melanoporus population.
The proper delimitation of Nigrofomes melanoporus species and taxonomic revision of specimens is going to reveal its real distribution.
