Justification
Umbilicaria phaea is widespread and abundant throughout western North America. There are two highly disjunct records as well, one from Ontario, Canada, and the other from Michigan, USA. There is no evidence for substantial declines of this species, and it is assessed as Least Concern.
Geographic range
Umbilicaria phaea occurs throughout western North America from Baja California in Mexico north to British Columbia in Canada and east to Colorado in the United States. There are two records from eastern North America one in Ontario, Canada, and one in Michigan, USA.
Population and Trends
Umbilicaria phaea is widespread and abundant on rocky outcrops and cliffs. The population size is suspected to be stable.

Habitat and Ecology
Umbilicaria phaea grows on a diversity of rock types and can be found on boulders, rock outcrops, and cliffs.
Threats
While this species' population size is likely not thought to be declining, residential development and expanding urban areas throughout the west can lead to local extirpation of individuals.
