Assessment Notes

The content on this page is fetched from The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/238744044/252902156

Justification

Aleuromyces gabonicus is a corticioid fungus that grows on dead wood. The species was described in 1986 from a 1979 type specimen found in Gabon and has since only been recorded in one site in Cameroon in 1991. Given that no further or more recent data is available, this species is assessed as Data Deficient (DD).

Taxonomic notes

Aleuromyces gabonicus was originally described as Aleurodiscus gabonicus but has since been moved to the monotypic genus Aleuromyces (Index Fungorum 2022). However, Gorjón (2020) cautioned that the relationship of this species with the Aleurodiscus genus is not yet clear.

Geographic range

This species is only known from West Africa (Gabon and Cameroon).

Population and Trends

Currently only three records can be found on GBIF, corresponding to one site in Gabon (type specimen found in 1979, described in 1986) and one site in Cameroon (1991). Given that there are no further or more recent records, population size and trends are uncertain.

Population Trend: unknown

Habitat and Ecology

Aleuromyces gabonicus is an annual corticioid fungus that grows in small patches on dead hardwood (Núñez and Ryvarden 1997). One of its specimens is noted as having been found in lowland rain forest (GBIF.org 2022).

Threats

Without further information regarding the full range of this species, the threats that it faces are unknown.

Conservation Actions

Survey efforts are needed to clarify the range and population size of this species. Its taxonomic placement should also be confirmed.
