Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Catatrama costaricensis Franco-Molano, gen. et sp. nov.  Mycologia,  83(4), 1991,  pp.  501-505.

Currently under Amanitaceae, but described in original paper as Tricholomataceae.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Catatrama costarricenses is a very rare mushroom species with restricted distribution in Colombia and Costa Rica where very few basidiocarps were found. It has been reported from india but the identification is not confirmed.
Based on the host distribution, its restricted habitat and the small number of known collections, and suspected population decline, this species could be listed as endangered under criterion C, but because of high uncertainty about actual distribution and number is considered NT

Geographic range

So far, species has been found in a single location with a few basidiocarps in Brazil and Costa Rica. It has been reported from india (Vrinda et al 2000), but identification of the species is not confirmed.
In Costa Rica specimens were collected at Provincia Punta Arenas:  Finca las Alturas, northwestern boundary with the buffer zone of Parque La Amistad, forest of Quercus pilarius,  1600-1700 m,  7 Nov 1989.
Extensively search to find specimens of this species have been done in Brasil and Costa Rica.

Population and Trends

This specie’s habitat is threatened and sampling efforts have proven to be unsuccessful when visiting the type locality. This probably indicates that the specie’s population is declining.

Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology

On soil, forest of Quercus pilarius, 1600-1700 m elevation in Costa Rica. Solitary, on rotten wood in a tropical forest in Brazil. The habitat in India is unknown.

Subtropical/Tropical Moist Montane Forest

Threats

Conservation Actions

The type locality for this species is a protected area in Costa Rica.

Research needed

To know the biology, ecology and distribution of the species more field work and confirmation of its presence in India, are neccesary.
