Assessment Notes
Justification
The only confirmed record of
Cantharellus schmitzii appears to be the type specimen, collected from southern Democratic Republic of Congo. In the absence of any further data, it is not currently possible to accurately apply the Red List categories and criteria and the species could theoretically fall into any category. Therefore, it is assessed here as Data Deficient.
Geographic range
This species is known from the type collection at Kipopo, Haut-Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo (Heinemann 1966), and there are no other known collections (Buyck
et al. 2013).
Population and Trends
The type collection noted that there was abundant material of this species (Heinemann 1966), so it is a surprise that this species has not been collected again since.
Population Trend: Unknown
Habitat and Ecology
The genus
Cantharellus consists of species that form ectomycorrhizal associations with trees. The collection of this species occurred in March, where it was collected in woodland, in humid soil at the base of a tree (Heinemann 1966, Buyck
et al. 2013).
Threats
Without a clearer idea of the full distribution of the species it is not currently possible to accurately identify any specific threats to this species.
Conservation Actions
Further research to find further specimens, and to get a clearer idea of the ecology and the distribution of the species is needed.
