Described from North Dakota in 1910 as Lycoperdon dakotense. Isotypes and authentical material has been distributed in many of the world’s herbaria. Belongs to the Bovista aestivalis-complex but species boundaries are not clear-cut. No sequence data available in GenBank.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

The definition of Bovista dakotensis is currently ambiguous and awaits a taxonomic revision with a global scope. Dry grassland species. Redlist evaluation is not possible based on current knowledge, thus: NE
