Taxonomic notes
This species is also known in the Mediterranean area by the name Beenakia mediterranea (A. Ortega & Contu) Borgarino, P.-A. Moreau & F. Rich. However, it is a heterotypic synonym of B. fricta
Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?
It is a very rare species with fragmentary distribution which grow in endangered areas in the Mediterranean area. It will probably be present also in northern Africa

In the Mediterranean region it is a species growing in the coast, in dunes or sand areas with Juniperus and Pistacia, a very treathened ecosystem

Sand coast with Pistacia lentiscus and Juniperus phoenicea. Saprobic growing in humus and fruiting in winter or late autumn
