Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Described by Demoulin (1972) to cover the European records previously attributed to the American species A. album.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Species with European distribution known from less than 10 localities;. Estimated number of localities 50 = 100 functional individuals = 1000 mature individuals. Its is a rare species but is potentially underrecorded.
Currently known EOO: 600000 km2; AOO: 20 km2

Suggested assessment: VU(D1)

Geographic range

Distribution more or less confined to the Mediterranean regions in southern Europe. Not known from other continents.

Population and Trends

Less than 25 records world wide originating from 7 localities (GBIF); no records since 2002 (Central Spain). Estimated number of localities 50= 100 functional individuals = 1000 mature individuals.
Currently known EOO: 600000 km2; AOO: 20 km2

No data on population status or threats.

Population Trend: Uncertain

Habitat and Ecology

Open sandy soil, along paths, under Cistus in Quercus suber plantation (Calonge 1998, Calonge & Demoulin 1975, Moyersoen & Demoulin 1996).

Threats

A small and fragmented population

Conservation Actions

The known localities should be revisited and a regularly monitored. Suitable Mediterranean , open sandy areas and thin woodlands should be subject of dedicated search abd re-discovery missions.

Research needed

Arachnion lloydianum should be characterized with DNA-sequence data. A global taxonomic review of the genus based on morphological and molecular data is urgent.

Use and Trade

None
