A species originally described from Chile by Demoulin (1972) and first recorded from Europe by Calonge and Demoulin (1975). It is closely related to the South American A. bovista differing in pedicellate spores.
A species with a very small and fragmented population. Number of functional individuals estimated to < 200 = 2000 mature individuals. No recent records (last seen in Spain in 2002 according to GBIF database which calls for urgent re-discovery missions. No population trends known, but a small and fragmented population is a threat to the survival of this species in a long time perspective. AOO < 30 km2; 6 known localities. Suggested assessment: EN (B) or NT(D2)

Saprotrophic, thermophilous. Grassland, open habitats on sandy soil.
Localities of A. lazoi should be revisited and monitored.
There is a need of a world review of the genus and to characterize its species with barcoding sequences.
