Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

A species originally described from Chile by Demoulin (1972) and first recorded from Europe by Calonge and Demoulin (1975). It is closely related to the South American A. bovista differing in pedicellate spores.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

A species with a very small and fragmented population. Number of reproductive individuals estimated to < 50. No recent records (last seen in Spain in 2002 according to GBIF database which calls for urgent re-discovery missions.  No population trends known, but a small and fragmented population is a threat to the survival of this species in a long time perspective. AOO < 30 km2; 6 known localities. Preliminary assessment: VU/NT (D-criterion)

Geographic range

South America (Chile, Argentina), Mediterranean area (southern Portugal, south and central Spain and Corsica).

Population and Trends

Very small and fragmented population. Trends unknown.

Population Trend: Uncertain

Habitat and Ecology

Grassland, open habitats on sandy soil

Threats

Conservation Actions

Localities of A. lazoi should be revisited and monitored.

Research needed

There is a need of a world review of the genus and to characterize its species with barcoding sequences.
