Assessment Notes
Justification
Amylohyphus africanus is a crust fungus only known from its original description in 1978. Further, and more recent, records are needed to evaluate the current population size and distribution of the species. Therefore, this species is assessed as Data Deficient (DD).
Taxonomic notes
This is the only known species of the monotypic genus
Amylohyphus.
Geographic range
This species is known from one locality in Uwinka, Rwanda, in the 'Rugege' Forest (now called Nyungwe) (Ryvarden 1978).
Population and Trends
This species is only known from the type specimen found in Rwanda. Given the possible large amount of suitable habitat, the species may be more widespread but the lack of more current records makes it impossible to calculate a population size and trend.
Population Trend: Unknown
Habitat and Ecology
Amylohyphus africanus is a corticioid fungus that grows on deciduous wood (Ryvarden 1978). It was found in the Nyungwe Forest, a tropical mountain forest (Masozera and Janaki 2004).
Threats
Threats to this species are unknown, without further information.
Conservation Actions
The type location is part of the Nyungwe Forest Reserve. Survey efforts in the area are needed to collect more data on population size, distribution and trends.
