Justification
Amanita smithiana is a common and widespread species in western North America. The population occurs over a wide range, and no decline has been noted. It is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Taxonomic notes
Described based on collections from Washington and Oregon, USA (Bas 1969).
Geographic range
This species occurs in the Pacific Northwest of North America, from southern British Columbia, Canada, south from the coast to the Cascade Range, through the Sierra Nevada, California, and coastally into Santa Cruz County, California, USA. It is also expected to occur in the northern Rocky Mountains. It has been reported from single collections from Idaho, New Mexico and Mexico (Tulloss 2021), but these collections should be scrutinized more.
Population and Trends
The population is widespread, and locally common in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. No decline has been noted.

Habitat and Ecology
It is ectomycorrhizal with conifers, especially Douglas Fir (
Pseudotsuga menziesii), and possibly with Tanoak (
Notholithocarpus densiflorus) in California. Fruiting is in fall.

No specific threats have been identified with regards to this species.

No specific conservation actions are needed with regards to this species. Genetic comparisons should be conducted on Rocky Mountain collections with ones from the Pacific States.
