Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Supposed to have a slowly declining population due to habitat loss and habitat quality decline. Well known species in western and central Europe but occurrences in the Mediterranean are may belong to closely related, cryptic species.
Estimated number of mature individuals: 10000
EOO: appr 2600000 km2
AOO: 500 km2
Suggested assessment: VU (C1)

Geographic range

Temperate regions of Europe, particularly Western and Central parts and southern Russia. Abundantly recorded along the Dutch coast. Northernmost records in Estonia (Saaremaa). Records from the Mediterranean vegetation may belong to other species and should be verified with DNA-sequencing. The same applies to an isolated record from Mexico (excluded from the evaluation).

Population and Trends

Seems to be a purely European species.

AOO 500 km2
EOO 2,6 milion km2
Estimated number of localities: 500
Estimated number of mature individuals: 10000

Populations status - ongoing decline

Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology

Saprotrophic on more or less basic sandy soil. Exposed habitats (steppe vegetation, grazed sandy grasslands, maritime sand dunes.) Occurs among low herbs, mosses and lichens and patches of naked sand and is favoured by moderate soil disturbance from grazing cattle.

Temperate GrasslandCoastal Sand DunesPastureland

Threats

Overgrowth of its habitat due to abandoned grazing.
Exploitation of localities (buildings, roads, camp sites etc)

Conservation Actions

Redlisted as EN (C) in one of its core areas (southern Sweden).

Research needed

Mediterranean samples should be revised using molecular tools since they may belong to other, morphologically similar species (cfr Jeppson et al. 2017).
