A xerpthermophilous species of sand dunes, sandy steppe areas, semi-deserts/deserts. Widely distributed but considered rare in several countries. Historical and ongoing decline of arid habitats due to abandoned grazing, irregation and exploitation.
Global warming and subsequent desertification may favour its population and expand its distribution.
Population trend thus uncertain.Given the known large population (estimated number of mature individuals 40000) and the wide distribution(EOO 209 000 000 km2) its current status is probably LC
Widely distrbuted around the globe in areas with steppe, semi-desert, desert habitats; also on maritime sand dunes, in warm temperate-subtropical zones.
Western United States, Chile/Argentina, the Mediterranran Basin, the Eurasian steppe zone and south Australia are core areas. Northernmost records in Europe in northern Poland (expansion?)
Widely distributed and with a large population. Is considered very rare in some parts of its range, eg, Mongolia, Georgia, Poland, Germany.
<1700 records on the GBIF database = appr. 1000 localities.
Estimated number of localities: 2000
Estimated number of mature individuals; 40000Its habitats are threatened in some parts of the distribution (eg Mediterranean area; tourism) and changed land use (transfer of sandy steppe habitats into arable land) or irregation combined with tree plantations in some areas.
Abandoned grazing in steppe regions may cause overgrowth. There has been a considerable historicaL decline in steppe habitats in arid habitats of Eurasia,
Population trend is uncertain or slowly declining but the desertification predicted as an effect of global warming may result in an increasing population.
Population Trend: Uncertain
Sapororophic, decomposer of dead plants and grasses. Fruitbodies appear solitary in open and exposed situations in sand dunes, sandy steppe habitats, semi-deserts and deserts, sometimes near Juniperus and other desert shrubs, or under Robinia.
Xerothermophilous, psammophilous.
Changing land use: transfer into arable land, irregation + tree plantations
Exploitation (tourism, hotels, buildings and road infrastructure).
Abandoned grazing and subsequent overgrowth
