Assessment Notes
Justification
Since the description of
Cantherellus cavinae there do not appear to be any subsequent records of the species. There is a lack of information on the habitat and ecology of the species, and it is not possible to assess the status of its population or distribution. While it has been recorded from several sites, it is thought to be rare and so could have a very small population size, but the paucity of information, particularly regarding the full distribution and potential threats it may face means that it could plausibly fall into any category from Critically Endangered to Least Concern. It is therefore assessed as Data Deficient.
Taxonomic notes
The type description highlights that
Cantharellus subcarneus Fayod and
C. miniatus Fayod are likely to be closely related or identical to
C. cavinae (Velenovský 1920).
Geographic range
This species has been recorded from several locations (Jevany, Kunice, Mnichovice (Plecháč), Říčany and Struhařov) (Velenovský 1920) in 'Bohemia' in present-day Czechia, to the southeast of Prague.
Population and Trends
It is only known from the type description, which describes it as 'rare', but occurring every year in some locations.
Population Trend: unknown
Habitat and Ecology
It was described as occurring in 'warm hollows' and with hornbeams (Velenovský 1920). Petrak (1950) describes
Cantharellus cavinae on the ground in warm
Fagus and
Quercus forest.
Threats
No threats have been specifically identified, and further information is required.
Conservation Actions
Confirmation is required of taxonomic status, population and distribution data and ecology to better assess this species.
Use and Trade
The type was described as edible, but no further information is available.
