Geastrum michelianum (Sacc.) W.G. Sm. [as ‘Geaster’], Gard. Chron., London: 608 (1873).
This is the European-North American earthstar that traditionally has been ascribed to G. triplex. The latter was decribed from Java, Indonesia and molecular data show that is is not conspecific with the European-N. American “triplex” (cfr Kasuya et al 2012, Zamora et al. 2014). G. triplex Jungh. s. str. does not occur in Europe and N. America.
Abundant species with a large population and a wide distribution in Western Europe and N. America. Populations status stable or improving. LC suggested.
N. America and western Europe. Extension eastwards into Russian Federation is not clear. Mostly recorded as G. triplex althought the latter is indeed a different species of SE Asia as demonstrated by Kasuya et al (2012) and Zamora et al (2014).
Abundant species with a large population and a wide distribution in Western Europe and N. America. Populations status stable or improving. Seems tio be increasing and expanding in northern Europe (nitrification + global warming?)
Population Trend: Improving
Saprotrophic species of both deciduous and coniferous woodland, also urban parks and gardens; nitrophilous.
Currently no threats
