Cup-fungi, Truffles and AlliesThe types of X. smilacicola, X. venosula and H. xylarioides share all characters that we consider of taxonomic value (e.g. ascospores of the same colour, shape and size, with the same germ slit orphology; H. xylaroides 15.5– 19.5×8–9µm; X. venosula 17.5–21.5×7.5–9µm; X. smilacicola 15.5–18×6.5–8µm). They differ in the shape of the fertile region (from globose to subglobose to subcylindrical) and the length of the stipe (from 0.5–13 mm or occasionally absent), characters that we accept as intraspecific variation and characters that intergrade in the extensive material studied (Hladki & Romero, 2010).
Due to the little information on the occurrence of this species, I suggest including it as insufficient data (DD).
According to GBIF there are 6 occurrences in the world.
According to GBIF there is only one occurrence of this species in Brazil and the United States of America.
Population Trend: Uncertain
Xylaria venosula is a white rot fungus.
In Brazil the species was registered in an environmental protection area, but it is an area that suffers from anthropogenic actions.
Species found in environmental conservation area in Brazil. But like other species it needs preservation together with the beings with which it is associated.
The genus Xylaria presents many complexes that are not well defined, taxonomic and phylogenetic studies are needed to better define their species.
Xylaria venosula, making the wood coloring to form the mottling pattern, is onekindoffungususedtoformthe line-patterned varietal wood, which can form a unique decorative effect and a certain medicinal value.
