This species appears to have only been recorded from North Carolina, USA. There is very little data available regarding the ecology of the species and it is not possible to accurately assess the population size and trends, as well as the potential threats the species may face. With this high level of uncertainty, Cantharellus helotioides is assessed as Data Deficient.
The original description of this species by de Schweinitz (1834) spelled the name as Cantharellus helosioides.
Chanterelle project
The type for this collection for this species is from Salem (assumed to now be Winston-Salem) in North Carolina (see de Schweinitz 1934).
There is no information regarding population size and trends.
Population Trend: Uncertain
It was collected on rotting branches (see de Schweinitz 1834), and so is suspected to be associated with wooded habitats.
Further information is required before an accurate assessment of its threats can be made.
Research is needed to find further specimens of this species in order to get a clearer idea of its range, ecology and taxonomic position.
