Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Syn.: Bovista dermoxantha (Vittad.) De Toni. Phylogenetic data place it in Lycoperdon subg. Utraria.
Kreisel (1967) includes both L. dermoxanthum and Bovista furfuracea as synonyms under his concept of Bovista pusilla.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Species of dry sandy grassland and anthropogenic sites (wasteland, farm yards, roadside verges, parking lots etc). Wide world distribution. No immediate threats, Suggested assessment: LC

Geographic range

The distribution is unclear due to confusions of names and species concepts. It is however widely distributed on the Eurasian continent from the Mediterranean region up in southern Scandinavia. It does not reach the boreal vegetation zone in the north. Also North, Central and South America and South East Asia.
It has further been identified in soil samples (e-DNA) from Georgia and China.

Population and Trends

Population status seems stable.

EOO: 206 000 000 km2
AOO: 2000 km2

Population Trend: Stable

Habitat and Ecology

Saprotrohic. Lycoperdon dermoxanthum is found in dry, open, sandy and often grazed grasslands as well as in anthropogenic habitats such as farm yards, roadside verges, old parking lots etc. Mainly in temperate regions.

Threats

No imminent threats, but long-term threats are present due to exploitation of its habitats as well as ceased grazing and subsequent overgrowth.

Conservation Actions

Monitoring of known localities to keep up with potential habitat changes.
