Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

syn.: Morganella subincarnata
Belongs to Lycoperdon subg. Morganella. The genus has its main distribution in the tropics.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Puffball with a wide distribution in the north-eastern parts of the USA and a small fragmented population in Europe. Distribution records from outside of N. America and central Europe are ambiguous.
European population threatened by current forestry methods (habitat destruction), status for the American population is unclear but potentially stable.
Suggested assessment: DD

Geographic range

N. America (main area in the NE of usa) and occasional in central Europe and Asia. Appears to have a more or less boreal distribution and records from other regions should be reviewed.

Population and Trends

>1000 records on GBIF. However, judging from the photos published there and on iNaturalis, a number of records from outside of N. America and Europe may be misdentications for other species belonging in Lycoperdon sg. Morganella.

American trend stable (?), uncertain in Europe where clear-cutting as a method in modern forestry may have implications.

Population Trend: Uncertain

Habitat and Ecology

Saprotrophic on decaying wood (on the ground) and directly on soil in moist, boggy places in coniferous forests.

Threats

Small and fragmented population in Europe. Main popu
Modern forestry (clear-cutting)
