Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Species of dry unfertilized, grazed or mowed grassland, habitats that are declining due to abandoned grazing/mowing causing subsequent overgrowth. Shares its habitat with several red-listed grassland fungi (eg Hygorybe, Entloma).
Large but supposedly slowly declining population.
Suggested assessment: VU-NT (A) (depending on the trends and status of unfertilized grassland habitat)

Geographic range

Main distribution in western Europe and eastern N. America. Scattered records from Asia and S. America to be confirmed.

Population and Trends

Appr. 900 records on GBIF database.
Large EOO (92 000 000 km2)
AOO: 1600 km2

Slowly decreasing world population due to habitat loss/decline.

Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology

Saprotrophic species in open, acidic, unfertilzed and grazed or mowed grasslands and heathlands and acidic sand dune vegetation. Reaches the arctic alpine vegetation. Suboceanic distribution tendencies; montane in central Europe. Habitat shared with a number of red-listed grassland fungi (Hygrocybe, Entloma).

Threats

Declining habitat conditions due to abandoned grazing in natural grassland.

Conservation Actions

Although fairly common it is redlisted in many European countries due to habitat decline/loss.
Action plans to maintain the habitat quality of dry unfertized heatland and acidic grassland,  In some countries this is already a highlighted habitat with a rich biodiversity, housing a rich grassland funga with many redlisted species.

Research needed

Records from outside Europe and N. America need to be reviewed to confirm conspecificity.
