A large population and a wide distribution in Europe and N. America. Scattered records from Asia, Africa, S. America and Oceania.
Populations seem to be stable.

Habitat and Ecology

Saprotrophic/lignicolous in deciduous woodland, often Fagus, but also mixed coniferous/deciduous stands. Often close to old stumps. temperate to submiditerranean.
