Europe, particularly western and central parts (nemoral and montane deciduous woodland habitat); Asia (China, Nepal, rep. of Korea). North American records on GBIF are ambiguous. According to Demoulin (1971) L. mammiforme is not on record from N. America and is replaced by a morphologically somewhat similar L. floccosum.

Historical and ongoing decline due to habitat loss/decline (forestry)

Saporotrophic species of nemoral woodland on calcareous soil. Most records from semi-shaded mosaic habitats with Corylus and Quercus (northern Europe) or in more or less montane Fagus woodland in southern and central Europe.

Threatened by habitat decline/disappearence due to modern forestry (clear cuting of Fagus stands) or overgrowth because of abandoned forest grazing or mowing (mosaic Corylus-Quercus habitats).

Redlisted in several European countries, due to habitat loss caused by modern forestry.
