Species of nemoral woodland on calcareous soil. Most records from mosaic habitats with Corylus (northern Europe) or in more or less montane Fagus woodland in southern and central Europe.
Threatened by habitat decline/disappearence due to modern forestry (clear cuting of Fagus stands) or overgrowth because of abandoned forest grazing or mowing (mosaic Corylus-Quercus habitats).
Redlisted in several European countries, due to habitat loss caused by modern forestry.
