A rare species (<100 occurrences worldwide) in humid boreal-hemiboreal woodlands and humid heathlands in North America and western-central Europe. Potentially underrecorded in some areas.  Modern forestry as well as overgrowth in heathlands due to decreased grazing are detrimental factors.

Suitable habitats should be monitored to increase knowledge of its population status.

Research is needed to verify conspecificity of South America and Korean records.
