Assessment Notes

Justification

There is limited information available from the species listing, and only two specimens recorded of C. coemansii.  With a lack of occurrence data and information on the habitat and ecology of the species, it is not possible to assess the status of its population or distribution.
It is therefore now assessed as Data Deficient.

Taxonomic notes

Cantharellus coemansii was described by G.L. Rabenhorst in 1867, and Index Fungorum lists Merulius coemansii as a homotypic synonym. It was listed by Saccardo in 1895.

GBIF taxonomy lists both C. coemansii and M. coemansii as synonyms of Schizophyllum amplum.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Chanterelle species to be assessed as part of the chanterelle comprehensive project.

Geographic range

Range unknown, described from near Ghent in Belgium from type specimen.

No georeferenced occurrence data available on GBIF, but one preserved specimen from Belgium and one specimen collected from an unknown location are listed.

Schizophyllum amplum, for which C. coemansii is regarded as a synonym on GBIF is fairly widely distributed in Europe, therefore clarification of the placement of this species may considerably change the assessment.

Population and Trends

Only known from type description and two preserved specimens.

Population Trend: Uncertain

Habitat and Ecology

No information available from type description and listing.  See Braun and Bensch (2019).

Threats

No known threats.
