Assessment Notes

Justification

Since the description of Cantherellus hygrophanus there do not appear to be any subsequent records of the species. There is limited information available from the species listing and with a lack of occurrence data and information on the habitat and ecology of the species, it is not possible to assess the status of its population or distribution. It is therefore assessed as Data Deficient.

Taxonomic notes

Cantharellus hygrophanus was described by C.P. Laestadius in 1867 in listed by P.A. Saccardo in 1887.

Index Fungorum lists Merulius hygrophanus (C. Laest.) Kuntze as a homotypic synonym of C. hygrophanus.

GBIF lists taxonomy of M. hygrophanus as doubtful.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Chanterelle species to be assessed as part of the chanterelle comprehensive project.

Geographic range

Range unknown, described from grassy areas in Lapland from type.
No occurrence data for C. hygrophanus or the synonym Merulius hygrophanus available on GBIF.

Population and Trends

Only known from type description.

Population Trend: Uncertain

Habitat and Ecology

Saccardo (1887) records the type specimen was described from grassy areas, but the extent of habitat is unknown.

Subarctic Grassland

Threats

No major threats identified due to lack of information about habitat extent and ecology of species.
