Clavaria rosea is a visually striking, widespread, but globally rare species of coral fungus and could very well be a species complex. While its distribution spans North America, Europe, and Asia, it is documented with very low frequency. 14+ herbarium records widely scattered in North America and 5 in Northern Europe (UK, IRE, SWE, DEN, FR) as of 2015.
There are over 600 known observations across the world and the actual number of sites is unknown. The species is also rarely found in Scandinavia and from scattered countries and states in the rest of Europe and North America. It’s global distribution is unclear as some information possibly refers to related species, but it is reported from North and South America, North Africa, Japan and Indonesia. Population Trend: Decreasing
In fairly rich soil, often with moss in both coniferous and deciduous forests; it can occur in early to mid-successional open habitats that are moist and rich; mid to late summer.
The threat picture is quite difficult to understand because it has been found in such different environments. Most of the growing sites are old cultivated grasslands on roadsides, parks and pastures but also several sites are found in forests. Changes in land use in these environments pose a threat. The species could also be threatened along roads by salt additions.
Conservation actions could include direct actions, such as habitat protection or lowering land-use intensity of unimproved grasslands, while more indirect actions would include mitigating atmospheric nitrogen deposition and climate change. Furthermore, collaborating with mycological societies to document sightings, establish long term monitoring, and deposit DNA-sequenced vouchers would improve our understanding of its ecology and phenology. Formalizing its status will ensure this sensitive indicator species is considered during future land-use planning.
