Justification

Cantharellus mexicanus is a species of chanterelle for which there is little information on its distribution or ecology. It was collected from a locality called 'Mirador, Mexico' but the exact locality of this site is slightly uncertain; although a GBIF record from Cordoba could represent the type collection. There are no clear habitat details for the species either. Given the high levels of uncertainty, C. mexicanus is assessed as Data Deficient.

Taxonomic notes

As the name is difficult to interprete, it is possible that it has been described again with another name (I. Olariaga Ibarguren in litt. 2022).

Geographic range

This species was collected from near 'Mirador, Mexico' (see Saccardo 1887). From records contained in GBIF.org (2021) there is a record from Cordoba, Mexico, with the collecting date appearing to match up. GBIF.org (2021) does also contain a record from Washington State, USA, collected from fir woods, but given the very different ecologies between the two areas, further taxonomic work is needed to confirm this site.
